DISTRICT NEWS
[From Our Ou,n Correspondent.]
KAfPARORO. The most severe frost ever experienced here was recorded last Tuesday night, the indoor temperature fulling as low at 27-J degrees. Samples of frozen duck eggs were on view next morning. The expansion caused Unfreezing had cracked the shells, and when cut in ivo, it was found that the white of the eggs was solid ice. and the yolks had the appearance of having been hard-boiled. It is suggested that an export trade in frozen eggs might at some future date be established. Notwithstanding the extreme cold experienced here during the past two months, rose-bushes attacked by aphides are still covered with these minute creatures. The hushes are certainly growing in a sheltered corner, but if all the pests which harass the farmer are as hardy as the aphis, it is doubtful if the, "man on the laud" derives any benefit from a reduction in the nnnvher and in the vitality of pests, owing to the action of winter" frosts. The last few days have awakened us to the fact that.spring is at hand. In spite of the chilly evenings, there has been a marked growth, and willows and other deciduous trees have burst into delicate green leaves. Though our climato here in the winteris not all that could be desired, in summer it is well-nigh perfect, the air remaining always fresh and invigorating, hence that season is looked forward to with a good deal of pleasant anticipation.
In view of the opening; of the milking season, dairy fanners -are commencing to pay special attention to their herds. Jersey cattle appear to ho first favourites, and quite a number of these arc being brought into the district.
