The outburst of enthusiastic applause which greeted the ■tenia rendered by the famous tenor ■.'.dearly indicated that his voice has iost none of its beauty, and ho was recalled .time and again. Mr New- . bury's renderings were such as one . rarely hears, his magnificent voice . being heard to special advantage in ■. tho romauza "Ma'ppari "(Marta)and in "Salve Diinura" (Faust), the au-.-dienco seeming as if they could not tire of hearing the beautiful notes. Mr .Newbury was especially effective in his top register. Madame Nellie Fieldhouse was in splendid voice, and sang '-'Abide With Me" and "Daffodils are Blowing" with excellent effect, having'to answer to an encore in each case. Miss McGregor':; rendering of "Mother Darling" and "Stolen Wings" was greatly appreciated. Mrs. ' Tai To Tau wss in good voice; her Maori songs, more especially the .Maori version .of ■ "Home, Sweet Home," giving great pleasure. Mr Gordon Stewart sang "Lighterman Tom" and "Father O'Flynn" in.good ■ ■voice. Mr'Pureed Webb's pianoforte solo "TJn Jour De> Noce" was highly appreciated.

GRAND BAND BENEFIT

' The'Masterton Picture Company tonight are offering to the picture-lov-ing public a highly entertaining programme of the latest films from Europe and America. Part of the proceeds wilt go to the aid of the Masterton South Band, and those who are desirous of assisting to place the band's .'finances, on a sound footing will no doubt be present at the Town

Hall in large numbers. The programme has been specially selected, many of the films having been shown a. few times only in New Zealand, and will bo screenod in Mastorton. for the first time to-night. The star attraction of the evening will be the magnificent Italian drama "The Carbonari." The acting, scenery and staging in this superb-photo-play reach a high standard of excellence. Many truly wonderful scones are depicted, ■ and the plot contains many highly dramatic situations. The remaining films are a very strong number and include the best'in drama, comedy ■ and scenics, while the Educational pictures are aim a splendid series. The programme is altogether interesting, and is guaranteed to satisfy the most fastidious taste. Mr Inn's orchestra will render n specially selected pro- • gramme of music.
