Miss M. Williams, of Masterion, gained second place in the Shakespearian recital at Napier.
The death is announced at Orepuki, Southland, of Mr William Mcintosh, late Government road and bridge Inspector of Hawke's Bay,,and formerly of Westland, aged i>2 years.
Mr J. McKenzie, of Wellington, has been appointed cadet at the Cartertertou railway station, and will commence his duties to-day.
Mr J. Archer, town clerk of Masterton, with Mrs Archer and family, is at present, on a short visit to Wellingtonl. .-*"*"
Mr T. W. McMaster, who has beenstationed' in Wellington for some time, will succeed Mr D. Loader on the staff of the Mastertoh Post Office. The death occurred at Palmerston yesterday morning of Mr Duncan Matheson, who was for several years a successful contractor in Wellington, and Duncdin. The deceased, who was sixty-three years of age, came-to the. Dominion thirty-seven years ago. Mr W. McKenzie, better known as "Off-side Mae," who has secured' an appointment on the staff of the SydNew Daily Telegraph, was in Masterton yesterday, and received the congratulations of his numerous friends. Mr McKenzie. leaver, for Sydney at the end of this month.
Messrs J. C. Cooper (president), O. E. Daniell and C. A. Tabuteau havebean appointed delegates firom the Wairarapa Employers' Association to attend the annual meeting of the New Zealand Employers' Federation, to be held in Wellington in September. The delegates will bring various remits before the meeting.
News has been received in Dnnedin of the death by drowning in Colombia, "Central America, of Mr John Chisholm, eldest son of Alexander ChJ'sholm, Outram. Mr Cliisholm was a distinguished graduate of Otago University, having taken his B.Sc. degree and passed through the School of Mines. After some experience of mining at Wailii" and in "Western Australia, ho went, under engagement to a London syndicate, to British Guiana.
The death occurred in Wellington late on Monday night of Mr T. G. McCarthy, one of the best-known and most influential residents of the city. The deceased was born in London in 1833. After a period in Victoria, he arrived at Otago in 1 1863. Subsequently he went to the West Coast, and established a brewery at Charleston, in which, with mining ventures, he was very successful. He afterwards started business as a brewer in Wellington, where he amassed a considerable fortune. He is said to have been the wealthiest citizen in Wellington. He was for many years a. director of the Wellington-Manawatu railway, and was also for a time chairman of directors of the Bank of NewZealand. He leaves a widow, but nn family. The Prince of Wales Hotel, in Masterton, was tho property of the. deceased.
