THE OTIRA TUNNEL.
It is reported that tho contractors for (lie Oti.ni tunnel, which is the connecting link between the East and West Coastg of the South Island, are asking to be relieved of their contract, because they are losing money on it. There is no doubt that Messrs McLean Bros. Have been unfortunate in this undertaking; but the Government will require to be careful in their treatment of the position. The whole circumstances under which the contract has been taken up and performed should lie investigated before a decision i,s arrived at. A very dangerous precedent may be set in releasing .;i. contractor from an obligation -which was entered into in good faith, and presumably with a- full knowledge of the difficulties to bo encountered.
