ENGINEER'S REPORT.

The following report .from the C'<>;in tv Engineer (Mr D. McLai hlai; i wa presented at .the- meeting of iho Mas tertoa County Council yrstord'v:— OPAKI RIDING.

A. Johnson's Accrued Thirds, £lo. —The above amount has boon expend od by day labour in improving :x"A extending the formation, giving acccsL to his. section from the main road.

The painting 'of two bridges on the Black Creek Ro.ul has been completed satisfactorily. Cootes Road. —As a result of the high ilood,, an earthwork approach to a platform bridge was slightly dam aged. Repairs h:ive been effected to same.

Upper Plain and Branch Roads.— Contract No. 282, delivering 1130 cub yards of metal. Little progress, has bee:r made on this contract since last meeting, owing to the unfavourable weather. The contractor is new engaged o'.'. the Upper Opaki Road .

' Sh'ps have occurred in the Aliki Miki and Kiriwlukapapa road:.', and I the repairs to them liave ber.i effected by settlers in the locality, for which j the councillor for the district has been j good enough to arrange. Chamberlain Street.—Owing to the collaps? cf a defective old culvert and pipe dr.iin at the junftio.n- of Chamberlain Street and Upper Plain Road, it has been necessary, on account of j flooding to road ar.id locality, to lay a line of 10-inch diameter pipes to a natural outlet, on the Oaks Estate. The execution of the work was authorised by the Chairman. Northern Approach.—The surface of the- original loose metal layer has been consolidated and extra metal has been supplemented, making good the depressions therein. Between the bridges a small layer of metal Inns been hyed ' along the centre, which gives that portion of the road a desirable crown. Acceti to Kopuaranga Railway Sta- : tion.—The formation giving access to the above has been completed, also | the necessary fencing cf the road reserve. 'J.'h 0 gate, nowever, has yet to be hung, which the Railway Department has undertaken to do. A small approach on the railway side is al.".i necessary before it cm bo utiKsad for wheel traffic. I Imo asked the Inspector of Permanent Way to attend to the matter at earliest convenience. RANGITUMAU RIDING.

During last month slips occurred on the Waingawa to Camp Ro;.d, Dorset's Road, Bhiif to 'RaJigitunuui Road, Ti ?r$ Rend, Wongaeh u Road, liiid Kalia-amu Road. On tk first five mentioned., wheel traffic was stopped for a short period, and the •roady were opened in their order of importance, with' the Council's staff and assistance.

Slips havo occurred oh .the Wcraiti and Pakaraka Roads. The roncis ; n '° now open for traffic.

UPPER TAUERU RIDING

To ore ore Bidefoi-d 'Road.—-On the Maori Garden section of the road north of mile peg 15 slips occurred, bice-king wlieoi traffic for a sh;;rt time. A washout at an old 2ft by 2ft culvert took place- on mile peg 18. 'J his lias been temporarily repaired, but it will be necessary to replace the culvert with a new one during the

On the section of the road, mile 7 and 9, the foramtion of the road ha& seriously given way on the lower lido, necessitating excavation into the solid to obtain * sound 'roadway. Be- ) twccui the Taneru and Mangapakeha > the road has slipped mor e or less in I many places, but not sufficiently vm- ' ous to interrupt wheel traffic. i Bhirlogie Road.—Between the Kerosene ridge and CVipps', several bad slips are encroaching on the roadway, and it i s with difficulty that tho read is being kept open .for wheel .traffic. o,n the Langdak-H'omewcod section, the road is reported to have islippsc! very little, but the metal surface cr; the low-Mag flats hap suffered -from the action of. water having scon roc! away -j. portion of the metal. On the Wcraiti-Ferynhurst Read en Mile 11, con&iderablo- slips have occurred, and at Mile 16 a- washout took place lit a culvert, .necessitating the r.ccc-'i-struction of tho embankment.

Th e work of formation is being carried out by { the council's .staff. j Saunders)' and Pori Roads.—Heavy 1 slips h.ive come down on the above roads, which ar e now reported temporarily open for wheel traffic. ! Saunders' Road'(Government Gnnt) —I have submitted contracts for approval to the P. 'W. Department for the formation of a G feet bridle traek giving 'access to the Puketoi Road ; the contracts have been approved with the usual clause. That work shall not be let until authority ha;s been received from the head office. Castle Hill ißoad. Proposed deviation at .Alpass: I have made an inspection of the proposed route with the councillor for the district, and it has been considered advisable to ad- j here to the present roidway. I •Hinemoa Road.—Painting a bridge, ' Contract No. 279. This contract lias I been completed. Slips have taken: place on the Barton's lino and Castle Hill Road. The former is open for wheel traffic, and the latter for bridle track. Thuraua Road.—The road giring access to Mr Heckler's property has also fe»eu cleared »f clip* for wheel traffic.
