ROAD GRADERS.
The deciisicn of Hi?. M:asterton County Council to procure road graders and teams, so that it may be independent,, of contractors, is one which is open to a good deal of adverse comment. It will be urged by mamy, with a show of reason, that the expense of maintaining teams and workers, to say nothing of tlie depreciation, will be '-an immeinse strain upon the Council's finances. As against this, however, it must bo remembered that the dearth of labour in recent years har made it almost impossible for the Council to get its ordinary maintenance performed. 'o:n the top of this is' the disposition of the Government to place the 'responsibility for expending public works grant© upon the local authorities. In all the circumstances, the County Council may he studying economy in adopting the new system.
