A FOOTBALL INCIDENT.

the Editor Wairarapa Age.)

S,^ —In Wednesday's issue of your paper, an announcement appeared to the effect that a football match had been arranged for last Saturday between teams representing the Post and Telegraph Department and Brancepeth Station. So far nothing lias -boon heard of tho result of this match. Knowing that it was not from any of the Brancepeth footb;:.lers you got jour information, 1 very naturally and rightly presume, that tho members «£ tho Post and Telegraph Department are responsible for it. I would like to know why they do not let the public know what happened. On reading the column one would think (as we did) that the Post and Telegraph men were sports, but I am very sorry to say, wc found them otherwise/ The Brancepeth Football Club received a oh alien go for a friendly game of football. Although we had onded our football season yet as Mr Beetham (fine sportsman as he is) offered us every facility, and being always ready to accommodate, we accepted it, and made all 'necessary arrangements. Great was our siirpise .and disappointment when we got a telephone message on Friday aftermoon to the effect that the match •oould not be played for reasons I will refrain from giving hero, as it would make them blush to see it in print. ' Not satisfied we made an attempt -to get a match, and was successful •(after offering to overcome the obstacle they put forward) in arranging :n match. Most of the Brancepeth team spent the night at the Taueni in order to be fit for the match. At half-past nine we learned by telephone that this match too had fallen through •and on inquiries were told that he who had made all the arrangements was in bed. Had it not been that the Taueru was nine miles from Masterton T can assure that gentleman he would have come out of his bed and got the •treatment he richly desorved..

We (although in the country) can •act like sports, and know how to treat fellow-Bpnrts. and ive feel sorry that wo- had to waste our employers' time over such -an unsportsmanlike lot.

What makes it more disgusting is that they have not had the courtesy to write and explain matters. Next time wo receive a challenge from such snorts as there are in the Post and Telegraph Department, we will know how to act.

Thanking you sir. for the space in the valuable journal.—T am. etc.. A BRANCEPETH FOOTBALLER.

Brancepeth Station. August 7th
