A trial representative match was
played at Carterton on Saturday bo-i-iveou teams representing Gladstone, lied Star, and Master ton and Carterton, Grey town and Liberal. The weather was very unfavourable, rain falling during the whole length of the game. The ground was wet and slippery and the ball very difficult to handle. There was n good attendance of the public, notwithstanding the rough weather. Tho north, who played in green jerseys, won the toss, and played with a strong wind behind thorn, and tho south started with two men short, the Featherston men not arriving in time. Green at once pressed, their forwards carrying the ball up to the South line. A free kick to Greens saw W. Darvill place a nice goal. North 3. From the kick off the Maroons took a hand, and chiefly by the aid of MoLaphlan and MeKonzio play was transferred to the Green's twenty-five, whore Johns ljad to force to save. Thompson and Welch were then seen in a nice run. which transferred play to the other end of the field, where a certain try was lost through a green player knocking on. A few minutes later L. Johnston took the ball through with some good footwork, the effort resulting in Henderson scoring near the corner. No goal resulted. North G. Tlie green forwards, playing a splendid game, kept their opponents on the defensive. From a scrum near the maroon line Ross whipped tho ball out to Thompson, who raced over, Darvill with a good kick converting. North • 11, South, nil. Give and take play , followed for some time, in which the j maroon hacks wore seen to advantage. Sandel and Mat-son getting in. some nice line kiokiiur, which relieved their side considerably. O'Brien took a mark in a nice position but McKonzie failed to nut the ball over. The j maroons at this stage were doing better, but good lino kickiiur by Thomn- I son, Mason, and Darvill saved the < greens. With play about half-way Mason intercepted cleverly and raced for the green line with Spackman alongside. The rush was stooped right on the line. Matson and Tate were defending well for South who were being continually pressed. A free kick to reds saw play transferred to the green quarter, when Darvill had to force, to save a score. Just on half-time tho best piece of play in the spell was witnessed. From a scrum in tho • green twenty-five, O'Brien got the ball and passed to Tate, the ball travelling through the hands of all the red backs. Sievers getting over in the corner. It was a ;
really good try. resulting from a clever piece of work; North 11. South 3. Half-time sounded a few minutes afterwards with the score unaltered. In the second spell with the wind in their favour the South held their own, and on several occasions looked like scoring, : hut chances were lost through faulty passing of off-side play. MeKenzie, who was playing a strong game for South, took a mark in a good position, and made a good but unsuccessful kick at goal. Bond and MlcKenzie led the rod forwards in several good rushes, and the green backs were kept busy defending, and had to force on several occasions. Thompson by good line kicking saved his side a number of times. The greens now broke away with MeLaucbttui, Hodge, and Mason in the lead,
carrying the ball to the i-eds' line, where Mason, following up well, scored. Ball missed with the kick at goal. North 14, South 3.. Henderson and Miller were then prominent in a forward rush, which almost ended in a score. The reds gradually worked play to the green quarter, where a lucky speculator by Johnssa ved Matson from scoring. Matson and Tale were putting in good work and niacin several good openings, which were not taken advantage of. As the g.nme proceeded the green wore gaining the upper hand, and started several good rushes. Jhe reds now took play to tho North territory, where good defensive play by Darvill saved the situation. A certain score was missed shortly after by a red man getting off-side. Johnson was prominent in a good forward rush which was stopped by Groube on thered twenty-fivo. Just on the call of time San del kicked a penalty goal for South, the final scores being: North 17, Soutli 6. Mr MeKenzie was referee.

) junior representatives and a thirdj class team. Owing to the bad weather ■ aikl state of the ground only one spell was played. The juniors led l>y 8 points, but the thirds held their own for the greater part of the time. The junior team leaves for Wellington next Saturday to play the I Wellington representatives.
