MASTERTON RACING CLUB
ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Masterton Racing Club was held in Murray's Hall, Masterton, yesterday afternoon, about twenty-five members being prosent. The chair was occupied by the President (Mr C. l'\ Vallance)., REPORT AND BALANCE-SHEET. 'TJie report of the Stewards, which has already been published in tho Age, together with the balance-sheet, was accepted as read. Mr E. G. Eton moved the adoption of the report and balance sheet. In doing so, he said.it was gratifying to find that tho Club was in a better financial position than it was last year. This fact reflected very great credit upon the Stewards. The Club was on the up grade, and it was only a question of time when the Club would be one of the most important in the district.
Jn seconding the motion, Mr A. G. Pilmer stated that the Club had had a successful season. Tho new grandstand had been favourably com man ted upon l»y sporting men from outside. A deputation had waited upon the Minister in reference to the cutting off of a day. Although it had not been successful, the granting of a license to the Raaigitikei Club left reason for the hope that there might yet be a change. Bo far as the one day meeting was concerned, Mr Pilmer thought this would bo made to pay in the long run.
Mr J. B. Moodie also congratulated the Club upon its financial position. He complimented the stewards, also, on the successful catering. He was not optimistic about get-ting their lost day hack. With .1. ,J. North standing at the comer they might expect the present Government to go slow in the in after of licenses. Mr Moodie said he would like to see a:t increase "in the membership of the Club.
Mr D. McLafhlan did not agree with Mr Moodie. He though there was every hope of getting hack their lost day. They should not be afraid of North and Co. Mr Massey should be informed that the country people were just as strong as J. J. North, and Co. The country people were entitled to their sports and pastimes. The late Government had backed clown and given in to North and Co. The present Parliament was not likely to give way in this matter. There were evils in the land far greater than that of racing. The open letter issued by Messrs' North and Aitkcn was simply a threat. The speaker had every reason to think that the Club which had lost their licenses would have them restored. Jf they were not restored this year they would be next. (Hear. bear). The Chairman (Mr Vallanee) said tl],at if the licenses were not restored, they would at anyrate have a chance of'receiving a reduction in the tax to the Government. Mr Macara : That would be the saving of the country clubs. The motion for the adoption of the report was then put and carried. NEW MEMBERS. The following new meni.hers were elected Messrs J. Corlett, .R. Grylls, G. H. Cullen and A. H. Vile.
