THE EGMONT SEAT.
It is natural to assume that the Egmrait seat, which will be 'rendered via.eanb (by tli-e. appointment of the Hon. T. Mackenzie as High Cbmmisisionc'r, wiDX be vigorously contested. The Government is •in a somewhat unfortunate position over the scat, ;is it cannot be expected, L : u the circ-umstancce, to use Mniaberkil influence to gain an accession to its ranks. Moreover, it is not improbabb that two candidates — Messrs Dilve arM WliTk.:ns.'on— will contest the seat in the Government interest. On the otiter hand, there is reason, to hope that ICgmont -wild realise the necessity for a'-s&ilug to produce a istable Government, and that it will return the ncirfnee of the Ministry—either on rfJhd first 'or second ballot—by a subBtaintial majority.
