■ENGLAND v. AUSTRALIA. BOISTEROUS WEATHER. {Received July 30, 8.55 a.m.') LONDON, July 29. The Australian cricketers commenc-ed-the Second Test match with the English eieven to-day. Tnc weather was boisterous and play was not commenced till 2.15 o'eiooK. The wicket was sore. R. B. Miunett, H. Webster, J). Smith and J. AV. McLaren omitted from the English team. 'C. 15. Fry won the toss, and Hobbs and Rhodes, as usual, opened i.. land's innings, Hazlitt and AVhitty having charge of the bowling. Sawdust had to be used on the pitch. Eight runs were scored off the first six overs. The fielding was smart, and only twenty runs were obtained in 25 minutes. Hobbs was bowled by a break hack. He had batted skilfully for 37 minutes. Rhodes had scored 12. tie appeared uneasy, and was mis-timing his hits. Nothing could lie done with AVhitty, and the hatsuion were scoring by small hits off Haziitt. Kelleway replaced Hasditt at 60. Fry, when he had scored 4, was nearly taken by Wbitty at short-leg in Kellowav's hrsl over. Rhodes was im-' proving." F<\v had reached 19 when he was caught. —3 for 83. Matthews relieved AVhitiy at 72; Fry scored two fours off Kelleway in one over. He reached double figures after batting 50 minut::-. At 19 he was caught at long-on. j Hearne, the next man, had scored a single when he was badly missed by AVhitty at mid-on, and in the next over by Matthews. Ha/.litt replaced Kelleway at 89. Hearne kept up his wicket while Rhodes was scoring. The century was hoisted in 125 minutes. Rhodes was now batting more freely. He scored 53 after 130 minutes. Emery rcpkicai Matthews at 110. He was nearly caught by Whitty at mid-on off Hazlitt before he had scored. Rhodes was 88, and was cautious. —6 for 175. Smith was next man, and played out time. Rhodes had hatted 220 minutes.
