QUESTION OF COMMITTEES
DISCUSSION AT BOROUGH COUNCIL. At last night's meeting of the ■Masterton Borough Council, the question of the appointment of Comanittees formed the su'bjeot of an inte'resting discussion. CV O'Leary proposed that the Gas Committee consist of Ore Donald, FlaiMgain,, Temple, and the mover. Or Pa-entice said that he onlly supparted the forming of Committees at Hast meeting 0 f the Council on the understanding that he was a member of each Oamonittee. He was there to repfresenft the ratepayers, and would require to have' an. initmnte 'knowledge of the business of the Borough. 'Or O'Leary stated that he was prepared to give his seat on. the Oomitiittee to Or Plrentice, as 'he would be satisfied if m Gas Committee ware s?t up.
'CV Envington said that ae Or O'Leary was the mover cf the Committee, he should he a member of it. He also thought that the Com■mjittee should, not consist of more than four ane.mbc.rs, and a motion to this effect was osirried.
Or Candy then moved a* an amendmeiiift that the whole Council act as a Gas Cbnwitteo. In the past, he said, the business of the Council had been well .dteai© "by the Council as a whole, and they, had always been a happy family. Or Prague)! seconded the amendment. Oh l , being put to the meeting the amendment was lost. Or Flanagan was d the opinion that in setting up Committees, tlie Ooimci was folJowing in the foetetept' of similar bodies ?:* other partis of New Zealand. He was cf the opinion that tlie time had arrived when the work of the Council could be best done by mentis of committees. Cns Prentice,. Efivingtcai, and P'ragnell were nominated as additional members of the Gas Committee, necessitating tih© taking of a haljlot to (return the four meniibeiro required. Th> ballot resulted in Cr« O'Leary, Tbinple, Donald and Flanagan heing retimrned as 'meanibers of the Gas Comimttibeo. Cirs Oatiidy and Plragnejl did not (record their votes. Or Ewington moved that Crs Flanagan, Temple, Prentice and the'mover be appointed a Pairk Committee, and the mot-ion. was carried. :
