EAST COAST RAILWAY.
[To The Editor.}
Sim-., — I wns eomi&wihat interested 1 in a recent interview which you had with Mr Colemaan Phillips, re the proposed East Coast Railway. To my 'mind, his. proposal is the correct one,, but the expense of such a big undeir- • 'taking would Me too large for many I years to come. In describing . his , 'route, lie says that Hie-' admits there j wiilL ho. difficulties' after passing 'Braaieepeth. Sow,. &k; tliig is where' , I do not agree wfith Mir Phillips, as: ttliie 'cbuniry fcom ißniaincepeth via Langdale to Tenui is msotly easy country, a,nd very'suitaMe to railway construction. My object an writing,. Sir, ,i,s, In view of the discussion on 'this question fbo take pjace in. Masterton .shortly. I would respectfully •suggest that tilie meeting contsider tlio advisability of adopting a. route from 'Mastertoiii. rfainiiiuig at .right angles !from the- present line, .until it reached Bra«c,?peth, thence on the .route pro--posed by Mr Phillipr* to Waipukurau. This would open up the country through Latogdale, Tenui, Pougaroa, Weber, etc. At ja future date the line could be constructed from Braneepetih viia. ■Ghidstonie and Martinborougli, across the mouth cf the Lake and on to Welfringtou, thus completing the southern portion of the B.ist Coast (railway. .A glanice at the ! map will show that the p-reaent linie from Maurice vilfe. to WicodviiJlb lays, nearly in the centre of the [island. In fact, ifc is KJligh% nearer the West Coast than the East. For many years' they have liatl: a line along the We«t Coast. ,Why can't .we have one ahngthe East Coast? Is, tlio laud en the Hatter Coast not so good as on tlwv foriner? Imy the land on the East Coast is superior, especially when wo consider that tlie' Tararuas are oar tlteW.estern Coast.—- i -aim., etc., FARMER. linui, Judy 26„ 1912.
