Mr A. B. Lane, who has ilwcn appointed sub-editor of the Southland Times, and Mr Hunter, who has joined the Now Zealand Herald stall', were the recipients of presentations from the Christchurch Press literary staff yesterday afternoon.
At the annual meeting of the Masterton Bowling Club on Thursday, evening, special reference was made to the good work done b,v the Secretary (Mr E. Pragnell), and the Treasurer (Mr A. Chapman).
The Rome correspondent of tho Irish Catholic, states .that the Pope has approved of the appointment of tho Right Rev. Daniel Mannix, President; of St. Patrick's College. Maynooth, as Coadjutor Archbishop .of Melbourne, with the right of succession.
The name of Miss Selina Sutherland was unfortunately omitted by Mr W. C. Buchanan, M.P.. in connection with tho opening of the Wairarapai Hospital. Miss Sutherland was the first tody to canvass the hospital, and her memory will live long in the history of the Wairarapa.
At tho inquest at Christchurch on the body of Canon Hare, a verdict was recorded in accordance with the medical evidence, that deceased died from shock following 011 injuries received in an accidental fall. Canon Harocame to New Zealand as Private See~rotary to Sir James Ferguson in 1872, and in 1889 took up duties as headmaster at Christ's College, which he carried on till 1893.
A Wellington message, states that; Robert Parker, oil retiring from the cond.netorship of the Wellington Musical Union was entertained at a social' last evening, and presented' with a purse of 150 sovs. The presentation was made by Mr G. Shirteliffe, President of the Union. Bishop Sprott was among the speakers. Mr Parker has been closely identified with musical art in Wellington for the last 33 years.
The following from the Poverty Bay Herald Worshipful 13ro. D; E. Leslie, who leaves Gisbsrne at the end of: the month for Masterton, was farewelled the other night by the brethren of Abercorn Masonic Lodge. Eulogistic speeches were m>ade by several' brethren, who referred to tiJie popularity of their guest, and the esteem and respect in which he was held in Gisborno. Bro. Leslie was made the recipient of « handsome P.M. jewel as atok<*n> of good fellowship. Mr Leslie,, in the course of a feeling reply, expressed v his regret at having to leaveGisborne. A .number of musical items and recitations were rendered during the evening. Mr Leslie comes to Masterton' <as first assistant at the district high school, in place of Mr C. N_ Haslani, who was appointed headmaster of the Island Bay School.
