Mr H. M. Bannister, chief clerk of the Taranaki Land 1 Board, lias been promoted to a similar position at Wellington, in succession to Mr G. Wright, who is retiring on superannuation. Mr Bannister, who is a native of Wellington, has been nearly 20 years in the New Plymouth office.,.
A very early settler, and an old" resident of Opawa, passed away oa Thursday in the person of Mrs Agnes Anna. Hariri an. relict of the late Mr Edward Harm ail. Mrs Harman', who" was a daughter of Dr. Willis, one or the early Cunterbury settlers, arrived liere in March, 1851.

Ex-Trooper Albert M. Beath, oi: Dunedin, who w?s one of the brightest spirits of the ■ New Zealand Second Contingent at the Boer War, and whofought like a hero at Rihenoster Kop. on November 29th, 1900 —'that slopewhiclr a military chaplain described as "the broad, open path that led .to Hell"—died last Friday, after a long; illness.
The Hon. T. Fergus nas retired from the Dunedin firm of Donald Iteicl and Co., of which'he has been managing director since the enterprise was floated into a company. The lion, gentleman, while severing himself from the cares of business, will continue (says the Dunedin Star) to fulfil the duties that devolve upon him as chairman of the Education Board and as a member of many other important bodies.

The death is announced at Auckland of Mrs Edward Lewis, a very old colonist. Mi s Lewis, who was 83 years of age, came to New Zealand from England wit'li her husband, Chas. Davis, in 1813, and spent nearly all lier life in Auckland. Mr Davis was a well-known merchant and owner of the ship Mary Catherine, in which they travelled to New Zealand. Mr Davis'died in 1875, and a few years; later his widow married Mr Fdward Lewis, a brother of Mr Gabriel Lewis. Mr Lewis died in 1909. The late Mrs Lewis leaves one son. Mr Adolphus Davis, and throe daughters—Mrs h. D. Nathan, Mrs Arthur H. Nathan, and Mr W. Carminer, of Wellington—and a number of grandchildren and ■ great grandchildren. On Monclap evening a very enjoyable dance was given by Mcsdames Dagg and Archer, in the Exchange Hall, Masterton, to Mlts Eileen Dagg. The Hall war? tastefully decorated with yellow streamers, and the passages, ante and- supper rooms, with evergreens and yellow. There were about forty couples present. Mrs Dagg, attired in a dress of black silk, with over-drC'Sr, rf union green and silver pa si?a-m en tries, and Mrs Archer in a black eh a mouse French dress, with bugle trimmings, received their guests a.t the entrance to the ballroom. Miss Eileen Dagg wore a dainty dress of wiliite union, with overdress of chn.mense. Among those present were Mesd<«nes Turner (Dunedin), Anketell. C. Perry. Milne, A. Daniel!. Waddington, Boddington.
