TOKIO, July 20 (Midnight). The Emperor of Japan (Mutsu Hito) is in a critical condition. His stomach and brain are affected. He was in an unconscious condition jesSiei'day.

" TOKIO, July 21. The Mikado's illness is closely related. to a long-standing disease of the kidneys. -

The Mikado was delirious, and in a high fever yesterday, and was drowsy to-day. There is still ground for hope of his recovery. There is a constant stream of callers at the palace.

Prayers are being offered -in the Buddhist' Temples and the Russian Cathedral for his recovery. Earlier bulletins are viewed with misgivings, owing to the custom, now less frequent, of postponing the announcement of a monarch's death. Prices on the Stock Exchange fell five points, but rallied at the close.

(Mutsu Hito was born on November 3rd. 1852. He the throne in 1868, and married Princess Haruko in 1869. His children are Prince Yoshihito (heir to tli? throne), who was born en Augrst 3'.sfc, 1879. and four Princesses. A son. and heir was born to the Crown Prince on April 29th, 1901. The Emperor's reign has been marked by great reforms. The fedual system, which had impeded the general progress of the country, was aolisJied in 1871. Under the rule of Mustu Hito, Ja.pan entered upon the Mutsu Hito, , Japan entered unon an unprecedented era. of prosperity. Civilisation, made rapid ,progress, and the introduction" of Western arts and ideas lias secured for Japan a foremost place among' the Asiatic nations. The Emperor gave the Japanese a Parliamentary Constitution based on European principles. His direction of the operations in the war with China was marked in 1898 by the Diet by a vote of £200,000 from the idemnity fund paid by China. The iMikado's Civil List is £300,000.)
