The friends of. Mr T. W. Mansfield, formerly of Masterton, will be pleased to know that he has received the appointment of engineer to the Hamilton Borough Council.

A Gliristchurch telegram states tbat 'the jockey Retter was yesterday much brighter, although he has not yet completely recovered consciousness.
Mr Alex. Wehster, at present clerk to the Pefcone Borough Council, has been selected.,out of thirty applicants, for the position of clerk, treasurer, and surveyor to the Ellesmerc County Council.
The many friends of the Rev. E. T. Olds, of Master ton, will he pleased to hear that his health, showed 'a goodf deal of improvement yesterday, ami at Latest advices Mr Olcla was progressing satisfactorily.
Mr William Trembath, a very old resident of Gore, and father of W. F. .Tremhath, the well-known athlete, died suddenly on Saturday morning from a rupture of a blood vessel 011 the brain.
Another of Masterton's old identities, in the person of Mrs Jacob Gunther, passed away at Wellington on Saturday night, after a protracted illness. The deceased had lived in Masterton for thirty-five years. She leaves five sons—Messrs A. Gunther (Masterton), T. Gunther (Opotiki). E., G., and D. Gunther (Wanganui). Her husband pre-deceased her four years ago.

Mr Gibb Johnston, son of Dr. Johnson, of Carterton, met with a painful accident on Saturday afternoon. • Mr Johnston was riding into Masterton from the property of Mr S. Mawley, Ditton, when his licrse stumbled and threw him heavily on to the rotid, the result being a badly dislocated shoulder. Mr Johnston was conveyed to bis home at Carterton, where he is progressing satisfactorily.
