AN IMPORTANT STATEMENT.

WELLINGTON, Last Night. An important statement concerning the finances of education, showing that the cost had been practically doubled in o dozen .Tears, was presented. to the Education Commission co day -by Mr Hogbon/Inspector-Gen-eral of Schools. Comparing (the year 1898-9 with the year 1910-11, the total increase on primary public and. nativo schools, is £360,000. I ba total inereaso on-secondary education, including secondary schools an«T the secondary departments of district High Schools and Maori secondary schools, is £7B.CGO. The total increase for techsical education is£so,ooo, and the tcv.il in.crea.se for higher education, £IO,OOO. In 1900t.berc tras an average aH&nda.nco of 22,418 at sole-teacher schools, theaverage cost being £3 17s 3d. la 1910 'the average a.tte.ndanee at such schools was 22,73, while the avcrego cost amounted to £7 0s Bd. of which salaries represented £6 3s 2d.
