MORE RACING.
In an address bclfore the Racing Conference in Wellington yesterday, Sir George Clifford.,stated that we "need more■ raring" in New Zealand.' From the view-peint of a eportsman, . Sir George wan probably correct. He should remember', however, that there is- nothing' in. the. 'world to prevent there being miore racing, if those in-tow-bed are willing to pay for the game. The objection to more racing is thxt it would .appai'cn.tly involve mere •gjur.lbßng. .Whether this objection is ' based upon.' .sound, reasoning, is quite another question. So 1 ' long as human, nature '.& human nature,, people wild' have their gamble, and it would not appear to moke * material difference whether there were onie hundred, or five hundred race meetings in, a; year. If there .is more betting at race meetingjs, there will be proportionately less at other sports gatherings. To attempt to betting htf\ reducing the totalisator permit's 'is ' like endeavouring to-prevent rt tree from growing by lopping off one of wo branches.
