The Australian cricketers commenced the second test match with South Africa to-day. The weather was glorious, and the wicket fast. Mitchell won the toss, and Faulkner and Tailored faced Minnett and Whitty. Faulkner, when he had scored five, played Whitty on to his wickets. —One for' 24. White in the next over was taken on the leg side of the wickets. —Two for 25. Llewellyn was easily caught in the slips. —Three- for 35. Whitty's bowling was excellent, but Minnett was the fastest. Hazlitt replaced Minnett «t 47. Nourse succumbed to a fast yorkor in Hazlitt's third over.—Four for 56. Matthews replaced Whitty at 65, and got Tancred's wicket. He had played steadily for 105 minutes.—s for' 74. Taylor and Strieker were now associated, and the host stand ensued. At lunch the score stood at five for 90. On resuming the attendance numbered 5000. Whitty and Hazlitt had charge of the howling. The century was hoisted after 130 minutes' _ play. The batting was vigorous. Minnett replaced Hazlitt at 127. Fifty-one runs' were obtained in the SO minuter since lunch. Matthews relieved Whitty at 135, and Kclleway replaced Minnett at 165. K elk-way got Strieker's wicket. The batsman played a dashing innings. He hit nine fours, and :b ! atted for 68 minutes. The partnership added 97.—6 for 171. Taylor knocked up 52 in one 'hundred minutes, and received an ovation. Whitity replaced iStattiiiews at 183. The.-second century -took 200 minutes. Mitchell's middle stump v.u.s taken by Whitty,—-7 for 203. Sehwarz "had not sabred when, l\e lost his wicket,—3 for 213.
