The death occurred at Gladstone on Saturday of Mrs Hui Banger, a wellknown Lower Valley resident. Wiremu Pohau Tamihana. of Masterton, has been gazetted a licensed Native Interpreter of the second grade. Mr W. H. Booth, of Middle Run, . -Carterton, left for Stratford"yesterday morning, to attend a meeting of the Jersey Breeders' Association. A cable message was received on Saturday, announcing the death of thefather of Mr W. M. Singleton, the well-known expert of the Dairy Division of the Agricultural Department. Another old' colonist has passed away ir the person of Mr Edward Howe, of Palmerston North. The deceased came to New/Zealand in 1857. Mrs J. H. Kibblewhito. of Fitzhor- ' hert West, and formerly of Masterton, was compelled to undergo an operation for appendicitis in a private hospital at Palmerston North yesterday. Word has been received that the Minister for Internal Affairs, nnd possibly the Prime Minister and the Hons. Fisher, Allen and Herdman, will be present at the opening of the Buchanan Home in Grey town on the ■ 25th insfc. J An old .Nelson identity has just died in Koromiko, Mrs Neal. She was born! in Wales j n 1839, and came out in the sailing ship, Sir Charles Forbes, in 1842. She herself was 73 •.when she died,, and her mother is still alive, at the age of 97, and'n's living at Koromiko. A Palmerston telegram states that Miss Ganstad, who has acted as honorary pianist for the Palmerston v ' ' North Orchestral Society for the past seven years, was last night presented . by the conductor, Mr A. J. Graham, on behalf of the active members of the Ssociety, with a valuable silver rose liowl in token of the general esteem and l appreciation of her artistic services, i A tragical stroke befell the Austrian Premier, Count Sturgkb, on May 15th, in the sudden loss of his , ■ eyesight. The most eminent ophthalmists in Vienna pronounced his case to be hopeless. Count Sturgkb is suffering from -an affection of the retina resulting from overwork. The Count has had but a brief tenure of. office. He succeeded Baron Gautsch as Premier in. November, only eight month's ago. A pleasing little ceremony was per- ' formed, at the works of Messrs T. iWagg and Co., in Masterton, on Man■Uay, when two of the employeesMessrs W. Biggs and J. Deane—were the recipients of presents from their fellow-workers on the occasion of their severing their connection, with the firm. Mr Biggs, who is leaving "for Melbourne, iwas presented with a case of Loewe pipes and a tobacco pouclt, whilst Mr Deane, who intends following farming pursuits,'received a handsome travelling rug. The presentation was in each case made by Mr J. A. McEwen, who expressed the deep regret at the loss of the companionship of Messrs Biggs and Deane.
