LATERAL LINES.
A deputation of <.ne —M.r Osborne Lilly—frcm Pahiatua, visited Dannevirke the other day to explain the (necessity ,for 'having what he termed ia series cf "lateral!" railway lines. Mr Lilly said he favoured "feeder" linos from Dannevirke to Weber, from Pahiatua 'to Pongaroa, and from .Eketahuna 'to lAlfredton. The chairman cf the Dfcwi'noviirke County .Council irather upset the propcteaJ of Mr Lilly by Suggesting that imotor services .would >be more economical. But the Pahiatua deputationist 'had evidently not gone to EDanmevirke on the "lateral" Ihis proposal alone. He was- veriy careful to speak depn.cutingly of the M'astertou-Waipukurau project. The (chairman of the Chamiher of Commerce, liowever, Lit the nail upon the liead when he said .that without the co-operation' of the -country settlers 'the agitation would look like a selfish •comimerci.il -undertaking. Precisely. The settlers want 'the -Masterton-Wai-pukurau connection, other will satisfy them.. And so the "lateras" will have to "'bide a wee."
