NAVAL BASE
TRANSFER TO AUCKLAND TRADE LOSS TO SYDNEY. (Received July 12, 8.45 a.m.) SYDNEY, July 12. The transfer of the naval base to Auckland means a trade loss to Sydney of from £BO,OOO to £IOO,OOO annually. Mr Kitchen, managing director of the Sydney Soap and Candle Company, suggests as a remedy to let the Commonwealth Government approach the Imperial authorities with a proposal to jo'itly ejpipoin.t n viotmailing officer who might act on behalf of both, buying for the Imperial and Australian Fleet vessels. "There would then be a chance of competing against New Zealand," s-ayis Mr Kitcheia, "and if Now Zealand can supply the i;oods at a lower price than ' Australia, then good luck to her; but the odds are we should keep most of the trade we have had before."
