His Excellency the Governor leaves Masterton on his return to Wellington this morning. Mr James Cameron, of Tinui, who "has been in Wellington for the- past month, owing to an injury to one of his feet, returned to his home on Thursday. £v Mr J. S. Tennant, Principal of the Training College, will be a visitor to Masterton next Saturday, -and not to-day, as previously stated. The death is announced from Otaki of Mrs Joseph Death, who lived at the Lower Hutt for many years, and was a daughter of Captain Henry Lynch, / who served in the New Zealand Militia ■during the Maori War. Mr J. H. Claridge, formerly of Eketahuna and Martinborough, has startled a newspaper at Otorohanga. Mr Claridge will soon have as great a name as a "rag-planter" as does Mr Joseph Ivess. At the Masterton District High School yesterday afternoon, Mr C. N. Haslam, who has received "the apf' pointment of headmaster of the Island school, was presented by the pupr" ils and teachers with a handsome solid silver tea service, tray and spoons. The presentation was made by Mr W. H. Jackson, headmaster of the school, who referred to the excellent work done by Mr Haslam in his capacity of first assistant, and to the general regret that was felt at liis departure. Mr R. Brown, Chairman of the School Committee, and Master George Saker also testified to the good work of Mr **•*- Haslam, who was heartily cheered. Mr Haslam feelingly responded.

The Hon. T. Parata, M.L.C., was a -visitor to Masterton yesterday, and ■was present at the Town Hall function an the evening. A Timaru telegram announces the _ _ -death of Mr Samuel Alfred Bristoe, a Ml widely known and popular old identity of that town. The deceased gentleman, who was in his eightieth year, was a native of Wiltshire, England, and came to South Canterbury in 1863, as farm manager of. the large Kingsdown estate, just south of Timaru. Mr Bristoe was an enthusiastic sportsman, and took a prominent part 5n Tacing, hunting, crieket, golf and bowling. He was president of many .athletic and sporting clubs. Among the victims who perished in the recant tornado .at Regina, Canada, -was a young New Zealander, Mr Geo. Bailey Craven, son of Mr R. B. Crav--en, Hellensville. The young man was irimaying at the Agriculttiral. College, I Winnipeg, Manitoba, and had passed f several examinations. Mr Craven was regarded as a young man of distinct promise. The Rev. Father Murray, of Wellington, is at present on a visit to Masterton, and is the guest of the Very Rev. Dean McKenna. . In the course of his remarks at the "Mastrrton Town Hail last evening, His Excellency the Governor paid a special tribute to little Miss Cecil Haines, a 1 dot of about six summers, who bad recited at the entertainment. The child, lie said, had started very early, and would be heard of again. A Wellington' telegram states that Mr G. W. Russell, ox-Minister of Internal Affaire, before retiring from -HBbfflce, appointed Dr. G. Oalkwell, of Auckland, to the position of Medical Inspector of Schools, thus completing the appointments agreed" to by the late Cabinet. Mr C. N. Baeyertz, who has been judging at the Masterton Competitions this week, .will probably return to Wellington this afternoon.

Mr A. H. Herbert, of Eketahuoa, who contested the Masterton seat at last election, is to be tendered a complimentary social. Miss Bead, late charge nurse at the Pahiatua Hospital, vacated her position on Wednesday. The position will "be filled by the appointment cf a nurse from the Masterton Hospital. B% The death is announced, at the age of 81 years, of Mr George Francis Bullen, The Elms, Kaikoura. The late Mr Bullen was born at Fulham, Somersetshire. In 1853, with his In-other Frederick, he emigrated to Melbourne, and both started work in a drapery shop there. In 1861 they came to New Zealand and Parted business on their own account in Dunedin, establishing what became known as Bullen's Corner.

Mr Robert Perrett, who had resided in Wellington for thirty-seven years, died on Thursday night. He was horn at Earl Stoke, Devonshire, on July 24th, 1835, and prior to coming nut to New Zealand in the i-hip Star v of India, in 1875, he was in the Engy lish Militia, rising to the rank of serinstructor in the Royal Wilts." The following is from the Dannevirke News: —Water diviner W. J. Piatt, of Masterton, was a passenger to Hastings on Thursday by the express train, his mission being to endeavour to find water on the Longlands estate. Mr Piatt has never yet been unsuccessful in his attempts at the location of water in Hawke's Bay, having found in ail nearly sixty sources of .supply. Latterly lie has been devoting his attention to the location of coal and oil deposits, and claims to have been successful in his efforts, having, he informed a representative, pointed out, while traveling at 25 miles an hoiir in a motor car in the Wairarapa recently, a coal hearing area which was known to be such by those subjecting him to the u4P test and of which he was ignorant. He has also located oil, and had intended - paying a visit to the localities in the Weber district in which it is hoped to obtain a rich find, but other pressing engagements have led to a rearrangement of his programme, and his contemplated visit has been postponed. Mr Piatt has had numerous successes in water finding, and is equally confident of locating the whereabouts of coal or oil.
