HEAVY FLOODS IN OTAGO

DTJNEDIN, Last Night. The extremely heavy rains, which have fallen on the Taieri plains and on the. high country at the hack right up to Middlemarch since Wednesday have resulted in a hig rise in the-ffaieri ■Riiver, and present indications .point to the likelihood of a serious flood on the plains. The downfall is the heaviest that has heen experienced for four years, and large quantities of surface water already cover portions of the plains. Settlers on the low ground are husy removing their stock to the higher country. The hain still continues, and since'five o'clock to-night the river at Outram has risen Bft, hut the worst effects will not he for another six or seven hours. At Middlemarch the river is quite a mile wide, and has risen six inches between ten and eleven o'clock to-night.
