The weather was dull when the Test Match between England and South Africa was commenced. The wicket was somewhat soft.
Frv won the toss and batted, Hobbs and Rhodes facing Nourse and Pegler. In the eighth over Rhodes made a wretched stroke, and was cleverly caught by the bowler.—One for 20. Spooner filled the vacancy. Hobbs was taken cleverly on the leg side by the wicket-keper.—Two icy 44. Fry was next man in. Fifty wore scored in 48 minutes. Spooner was caught at deep square leg.—Three lor 67.
Hearno was next in, and one run was added when Fry got his leg in front. —Four for 68. Woolley filled the vacancy, and the best stand of the day followed. The century was obtained in 93 minutes. Faulkner relieved Nourse at 101, and Carter took Pcgler's end at 122. At lunch the score was four for 148. On resuming the weather was brighter, and the wicket faster. There were 7000 present. Nourse and Pegler again took up the bowling. When the score had reached 179 the separation came. Hearne, in playing back, was bowled. —Five for 179.
' Jessop came, next, and in the following over Woolley. in attempting to on-drivo, was bowled. —Six for 181. Foster filled the vacancy. Smith, when 13, was run out. Eight for 22(5. Barnes came next, and was bowled in the next over without scoring.— Nine for 227.
Dean was the last man.. Foster scored eleven in one over off Pegler. Nourse relieved Faulkner, and Foster was taken at mid-off off his first ball. The innings lasted 200 minutes. Scores:—

Taylor scored a single off the first ball, and then did not score for 45 minutes. He" was not enterprising. Tancred mishit to. deep cover—l for 18.
Nourso filled the vacancy and seven had been added when lie was bowled— Two for 25.
Llewellyn was next, and was caught off the second ball. —Three for 25.
Faulkner filled the vacancy, and was caught by Barnes off his own bowling.
. Strieker was next in. Dean relieved Faster, who had sent down ten overs for 14 runs. The fifty took 80 minutes to score. Woolley relieved Barnes at 66, and Strieker was yorked.—Five for 69.
White, the next man, did not last long, being taken at mid-off. Taylor had now scored 30. —Si xfor 76. Snooko was the next batsman and 4 ■had been added when Taylor in attempting to leg hit was caught at cover. He was at the wickets 110 minutes, and showed excellent' defence. —Seven for 80.
Pegler filled the vacancy, and a better stand ensued. The century took 125 minutes. The batting was bright. Foster relieved Dean at . 105, and Barnes took Woolley's place at 109.
Snooko was hitting freely, and Pegler scored by hard and uppish hitting. Snooke, when 23, was bowled —8 for 130. Carter, the incoming batsman, with Pegler played out time. Scores:—
