Messrs C. ;N\ Baeyertz (Wellington) atwJ Harold Gregson (Auckland), who are acting as judges at the Competitions, arrived sa Masterton last evening, and are staging at the Club Cafe. Mr A'Court Opie, until recently clerk tc the Waiwapa South County Council, was on Saturday appointed engineer to the "Ak&io County Council, at a salary of £<so per annum. The employers of the Akitio County Council on Saturday last presented Mr R. R. Dawson, the late engineer, with a purse of sovereigns, Mrs Dawson was also the recipient of a travelling rug from he ladies of Pongaroa. Mr Byron Brown, of Otaki, who was one of the Reform Party candidates for the Otaki seat at the last election, is at present in Masterton for the competitions.

An Auckland telegram states that Major Mair, formerly a Judge of the Native Land Court, and who took a prominent part in the Maori War, died at Waiotapu, near Rotorua, yesterday morning.

It is stated that Mr F. M. B. Fisher, M.P., may be offered the Chairmanship of Committees in the House of Representatives.

Mr John Hudson, of lea, received word yesterday that his father, Dr. Hudson, of Nelson, had that morning met with a violent death. Mr Hudson, who leaves Masterfcon this morning for Nelson, will have the sympathy of a wide circle of friends.

A Timaru telegram states that Mr T. Gilliman, for 30 years employed as an accountant by the New Zealand Loan Company, died suddenly on Sunday. Mr Frederick George Elvery, a mihi of means who has been resident in Palmerston North for the last twelve years, was found dead in bed on Saturday morning.

At a meeting of the Masterton Oddfellows' Lodge last evening , Bros. C., Perry, H. Snell, P. Smith, and A. Rippon were appointed to represent the lodge on the Town Beautifying Society.

Visitors at t'lie Club Hotel include Mr and Mrs Baeyertz (Dunedin), Messrs Gregson (Auckland), Snyder, Westincott, Brown and Myers (Minstrel Co.), Cunningham (Te Roto), Byron Brown (Otaki), Fox, Garner, Wilson, Fargehen, Binning, Bennett, Hadfield, Hanlau, Rankin, Tanner, Murrell (Wellington), Hudson (Waimimi), Mrs and Miss Miller (Ballance). The death occurred on Sunday, at the Greytown Hospital, of Mr Thos. Doherty, a very old and well-known resident of Carterton. Deceased had been in failing health for some time past, and liis condition on Saturdaywas of such a nature as to necessitate his removal to Greytown, but he did miot survive long. As a certificate has been given as to the cause of death, no inquest will be held.

A quiet wedding took place'at Tawaha last week, when Mr Arthur Greenhill Parker, late of Tawaha and now of Hukanui, was united in the bonds of holy matrimony to Miss Sparkes, daughter of Mr and Mrs W, JSparkes, of Tawaha. The wedding was solemnised at the house of the bride s parents, the officiating clergyman being the Rev. E. C. Tennant.

Mr C. N. Haslam, first, assistant at the Masterton District High School, who has been appointed to the headmastership of the Island Bay School, has been instructed to take up bis new position on Monday next. Mr D. E. Leslie, of Gisborne, who succeeds Mr Haslam in Masterton, is expected to arrive during the first week in August. In the meantime a relieving assistant will probably be appointed to Masterton.

Mr C. Perry, who has resigned from the Secretaryship of the Masterton Oddfellows' Lodge, was last evening presented with a handsome fruit dish and also a beautiful silver inkstand. Mr Krahagen, who made the presentation 011 behalf of the members of the Lodge, referred in most eulogistic terms to Mr Perry's fifteen years' connection with the Lodge, during which time he had rendered most valuable services, and stated that during that time the financial position of the lodge had been placed on a very sound basis, while the membership had also greatly increased. Mr Perry, in responding, thanked the members for their handsome gift, and thanked the past officers for the aid they had given him during his term of office. Mr J. Harder, ex-President of the Taratahi Meat Workers' Union, was tendered a farewell .social in the Masterton Druids' Hall on Saturday evening. The members of the Union were present in full force, and the Masterton branch of the Labour Party was also strongly represented. Mr Brur. President of the Union, in proposing the health of Mr Harder, referred to the excellent work Mr Harder had done as President of the Union, and spoke of the high esteem in which he was held by the workers. A long list of toasts was honoured, and a number of vocal items were rendered by those present. Mr "Harder will receive a presentation from the members of the Union before leaving Masterton.
