LONDON, July 5. For the second time this season, Lancashire inflicted defeat on the Australians, on this last occasion by eight wickets.
The weather was dull, the wicket firmer though difficult, when play was resumed to-day. Whitty and Hazlitt began the attack, but when Matthews replaced Bbzlitt the combination was disastrous. Thirty-seven were added to the over-night score. The not out hatsmen (Sharp and E. Tyldesley) alone made any stand. Tyldesley played a sound innings of eighty-five minutes duration. Sharp showed good all round form, his score of GO including four 4V Sharp was at the wickets 140 minutes. The last six wickets fell in half an hour. Whitty to-day took four wickets for 18 runs. The Lancashire innings terminated after three hours' batting.
AUSTRALIANS' BAD START
The Australians mado a bad start in their second innings. Jennings was taken at the wickets in tho second over. The colonials then threw away two wickets: Macartney run out in attempting a foolish run, Hornby at silly point throwing down the wicket. Dave Smith, who had played a careful innings, suffered a like fate in trying an impossible second run. Three wickers were now do'.vn for 30.
Bardsley, playing a ear fd game, was caught at long-on, after making 15 in sixtv-five minutes.
After Bardsley left, tho only player to make a stand was Matthews, who ; went in when six wickets were down, and played a splendid and resolute innings for 36 not out, after being at the wickets vthirty-five minutes. His score included' six four's. The fifty was reached in ninety-five minutes, and the whole innings was concluded after two hours and five minutes' play. Lancashire, with 115 to win, accomplished the task in <an hour and a half. Makepeace batted soundly, and Spooner showed splendid all-round form. His score included twelve 4's. Details are as follow
