JOHNSOH BEATS FLYNN

."Jack" Johnson, world's champion pugilist, easily retained the titleln tho match with "Jim" Flynn, his challenger, at Las Vegas to-day. The police slopped the fight in tho ninth round, when Flynn, badly whipped at the time, tried to lose by deliberately fouling Johnson by butting. Flynn was frightfully beaten, while iiEie ciliiunip'Xln. wix» 'hardly marked. Throughout the fight Johnson played with his opponent, who in the last three rounds realised he was beaten, and tried to lose_on a foul by butting. Johnson throughout held himself in reserve, and fought carefully. In the first round, Flynn started rushing. Johnson easily avoided him, cut a deep gash under his lefteye, and shook Flynn up with left and right hooks. ihi \iw KcciTid round Jolmson toyed with Flynn, who bled from the mouth. Flynn, in round three, met with some success. He rushed and hooked right and left to Johnson's mouth, bringing blood, but the ex-fireman was streaming at he went to his corner.
Flynn Avas badly punished in the next three rounds. Tho challenger tried to reach John-son's stomach, but the latter only laughed at his efforts, dazzling the spectators with his speed. Flynn started butting in the sixth, and was warned. Tho ex-fireman claimed that Johnson was holding. The champion dazed his opponent with a volley of straight lefts and rights to the face. Then he stopped, apparently to prolong the fight. In the seventh round Flynn failed to land a blow.. On the other hand, Johnson landed a dozen hard'punches, and made the blood flow as he rained the blows. His opponent resumed his butting cticis in the eighth round, and was again warned. He was unable to land a blow. Johnson, in the ninth, held Flynn at arms length to prevent him butting. Finally Flynn got close, jumped a foot in the 'air, and landed with the top of Ins head against Johnson's jaw. At this stage the police thereupon stopped the fight, and Johnson was awarded the decision. The crowd, moved to wrath at Flynn's tactics, hooted the loser.
