Mr 10. M. Mcintosh, of the Masterton Por-t Office, who is shortly leaving to take up an appointment at Oamaru, has been presented with a handsome travelling case by the members of the Opaki Rifle Club, of which he has been a prominent member for a number of years past.
The death of Mr John Dunne, a very old resident of Balclutha, is jnno mc-; ed. He came to New Zealand in 1863, to take charge of the Queenstown gold' escort, and subsequently had charge of the Tuapeka and Balclutha police districts. .In 1872 he started in business as a hotelkeeper. He was Mayor of Balclutha for seven consecutive years, and held the same office on twosubsequent occasions.
A Feilding telegram announces the death of Mrs Whisker, at the age of 70 years. The deceased lady was born at the Hutt, and first went to the Feilding district in 1846. She passed through some stirring times and saw a good deal of the Maori wars in the early days. Mrs Whisker leaves a. grown up family, including several sons, who have taken a prominent part in Rugby football in the Manawatu.
Mr E. Pragnell, who has been associated with the Masterton Fire Brigade for the past twenty-five years, and who is resigning from active membership, in presenting his annual re-' port, made reference to the courtesy which was always extended to him by the members of the brigade. Although leaving the'active ranks of the Brigade, Mr Pragnell said that he would always have the interest of the Brigade at heart. Superintendent Jenkins made eulogistic reference to the invaluable services rendered to the Fire Brigade by Mr. Pragnell, and moved that there be placed upon tiny records of the brigade the excellent work done by the retiring Secretary during his long connection with the Brigade. Several other members spoke of Mr Pragnell's splendid work as a fire-fighter.
A quiet but pretty wedding took place yesterday at the residence of Mr John Hart, Columba Road, Masterton, when Mr Herbert Sutton, second son of Mr Chas. Sutton, of To Aroha. Auckland, was married to Miss Ethel Hart, eldest daughter of Mr J: Hart. The service was performed by the Rev.: S. J. Serpell, in the presence of a number of friends. The bride, whowas attired in a grey tweed costume, with hat to match, was attended by her sister, Miss Trissie Hart, dressed in a pretty cream serge costume, with mauve hat. The bride was given away by her father, and Mr Russell Suttoii (brother of the bridegroom) acted as best man. A large number of costly presents, including substantial cheoues, were received, and the bai-ny coup!" left bv the evening train for Now Plymouth, when they intend to reside.
