SHELL DROPPED INTO A MAGAZINE.

Whilst the members of the crow of H.M.S. Thunderer were engaged in filling her magazine at Dovonport, ,iiul were jiisfc on the point of completion, a 13.5 shell slipped from the sling ai«d fell a distance of 30ft on to the magazine floor.
The crew were horrified, and rushed some distance away, but though the fuse was dented by the contact wit.'i the flooring, it was a miracle it did not explode. If it had done so it wo.iM have destroyed the ship. Further work was suspended to cn■■"iblo the men to .recover from the shock.
(The Thunderer is one of the largest additions to England's fleet of batihships. She was built at Blackwall l-y the Thames Ironwork and Shipbuilding Company, and was launched last yi-nr. 'She is ib'eirg compiled at Dovonport. The Thunderer is of 22,500 tons, her dimensions being:—Length 515 ft, beam 88£fc, draught 271 ft; her indicated horse-power is 27,426. Her . siimated cost is set down at £1,885,143. Siie is Equipped with ten 13.5 and sixK"pu 4in '-'-ins. tvvl 3 torpedo tuber*. Her speed is 21/ knots.)
