>' SATURDAY'S GAMES. | The second round of the Wairarapa ■ Rugby championships commenced on Saturday, when an aLmccfc complete. j reversal of form resulted. It w;u: I;. though* that Gladstone, Stars aud I Gairtertoin. were sure to win their rcI spective matches, (but results proved otherwise, the' latter team winning by a narow margin,, while 'Gladstone and Stars put down hy GreyI 'town*'and Liberals respectively. The I weather conditions rendered good fcotj bail impossible, and the various : matches l resolved themselves into mere mud iscramlbles. Saturday's results make the champjeaebip issue more i open than ever, a'.rid it looks as if any team may win tho banner. On the other hand too much notice should net ; be- taiken <;f Sbturday's results, and , on such a day the .best team does, not ! always .'.vcj.u 'The jref-et-eo question was again much discussed, and it is unSortuinate for the- Wair.irapa Rugby ! "Union that there is cmily one really ; capable .referee in .the Union. Several ' decisions given in tho G:rcytow7i-Glad- ; 'stone ma toll, could net be disregarded. . iro one knoiyirig ifor 'what decision's I were given. The whistle was much in ovideuco, while every player on the ! ground was having a. say. A standj v.p fight wals 'ailso pairfc of the perform- [ anco. It is not likely .to .boneiit Rugby ' ! much in tho Wairarapa a'f referees are I nob able to ccmtrcl a game properly, which, is their first duty. It is a pity we have mot one or two more menilike j E. 'M'cKen-zie. The following are tho i rjsui.: of v:io various galaies:—
i SENIOR. CARIERTCN (8) v. MASTERION (o). At the Carterton Showgrounds on Saturday, the above match attracted | the majority cf the spectators, and ' proved a really good game. The ground i was so soft (that many of the players (found it impossible to secure a footing, and it was often the case thaJfc as many j as half a dozen 'were down together, j squirming in the mud. Carterton ; were not folly represented, motaMe . among the, absentees /being C. .Groulbe, wliose presence in the backs was greai- | 'ly aniseed. Carterton won the tossj and played with the wind and rain i at their hacks. Thci first .spell consulted of la iseiries icif forward scrambles 'and iscruriwnages. Carterton had much the heavier pack, ibut Masterton were hooking the ball frequently. Shortly after the commencement of play V. Fair-brother succeeded in crossing the line amd scoring for Carterton— the cmily try of the spell. On. changing ends Carterton attacked consistently, and after a. passing bout Carterton's-'second and last try was scored by JT-air.broifih.er. The kick at goal was again a failure. .Mastertoa now put iin their iolaim, and from this i stage Carterton, mover, had a lock in, J play being continuously in their territory. Despite overwhelming ele-' 'mentis,, Master-ton forwards attacked again and again, and Carterton- had to touch down on several ooca.sionls. The efforts tof the blacks were not re- \ warded ■till dbout half way through I 'tlie .spell, <W. {Darvil dribbling, the ■ball through from half way and scoring Ibeneath the post©. The try was also converted by the same player, who received an ovation. The score was now'Carterton 6, Masterton -5. I iSpurred on Iby the thought cif a pee- J ■sible victory, the Macks again pressed, I ■amd ia>b times were within, an ace cf I (scoring, ibut 'someone always imiilled j t'he (ball at (the critical moment, and j the maroons left the field victors by ■file marrow margin of one point. Mas-ter-ton's light backs had the ad vantage of the wet ground, .and outshone .their opponents. The Carterton forwards were very strong, hut tired towards !the cbnclusion of the game. , Mr ' Roydhouse capably controlled th? gams.
LIBERAL (0) v. BED DSTAR <6.) Another .surprise! In tlie first spell •matters were fairly, even, -the forwards •halving-the game-pretty well to themaselvc®. Both sides were unlucky en several cccuaicms in not gearing, but iwiith such a, ground and a greasy hail,, scoring was an clement of iluck, and to the day the luck went to Liberal. t 'Cß:°cl Star led almost right nip to time, when, a' ssn'safcio'nii.l potted goal gave the game to Liberal. Stars were .many times unlucky towards the finteh, and all tout, .scored on .numerous cccasior-c-. The game ended liberal '9, ißed Star 6. Mr Melvonzio con--1 trolled tho game, I 1 G&MTOWN (6i v: GLADSTOKE (5). Greytowrt Once again defeated Gladstone, and are to bd congratulated on. their recovery. The ground was like aq.ur.gm.ire, aad it wa,s impossible to do anything hub ikiek. Greytown won the toss, .iiiid played, .with .tho incline in their favour. Greytown. forwards started off we'll', and confined play to their opponents' twenty-five. The game was conltmially being stopped iby inirringemenits, which on such u day teould hardly be avoided. In tho scrums Greytown 'were quite as good as Gladstone, hut the ball failed fe> tome out cjeain, and the backs were generally smothered 'by the forwards. Several loose rushes by the forward,? of bot|i teams nearly resulted in trias. -being registered;, but rtlie- wrong .thing was gcne-raiHy dcJne at the right moment. The spell ended with no ecorc. Oni changing over .tho yellow forwards rushed things, and a loose rush
saiAV H. Bcmdenson .adore the first try for Gladstone. S'extcn kicked u gocid gcal. It rjow looked as iif Gladstone must wiiv, -but shortly after 'D'anger kicked the ball well tip field, and outpacing TlK.i.ripson. ccored for Greytown. The kick at gca,l failed. Gladstone forwards: eoiitimied to attack, •but with no luck. A free kick awarded in, front of the lattor's goal saw Victor place- a goal to Greytown'r: credit. From this out Gladstone forwards were •continually on their opponents' Bine. From a scrum c;a. tho lino three Gladstone f;:.v\v>ard'o . took the ball aciroso and fell en it. The referee couldn't see, and ordered a force—who forced no one known. Shortly after Hiekson took what appeared to (be a fair pass, aind scored. The ruling \\a<* "passed forward." Th? game ended with the yellows pressing, and the score— Greytown. 8, Gladstone 5. i'Mr u. "Wickcus was referee. JUftlOR. OARiTERTOX (.32) v. RED STAR (3) Carterton wore, .superior from the kick off, and scored -when and where they wished. The few spectators, if mot .witnessing ,a good exhibition of (football, had heaps of am.usemra't. The final scores—32 to 3 fully indicate the merits of tlie match. .Rev. Ash- ; croft refereed. It I DALEFIELD (18) v. GREYTO W.X (3). Dalefield had mil the best of tho game, their forwards revetting in, the | mud, and were unlucky that the score [ was iwt added to. Mr .Watcrson wv.ti the referee. 1 THSRD CLASS. CARTERTOX (3) v. MASTERTOX (Nil.) This was «. well contested game ithrouighout, the forwards of both teams playing- a good, hard game. The I score, Cn!rtci".ton, 3, Masterton nil, I gives a good indication of the game. ! POSSTIONS OF THE TEAMS. The following are the positions of the various teams m the champion- I ships.—
