SERIOUS STRIKE

CABLE NEWS

(United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.)

IN PORTUGAL BOMBS THROWN AND SHOTS EXCHANGED. (Received Last Night, 5.5 o'clock.) LISBON, Jane 22. The situation in regard to the tramway strike is becoming increasingly serious. Many attacks have been made on workers, including English mechanics brought from a passing steamer to overhaul the electrical machinery. The strike is due to a dislike for foreign companies. The Government has arrested the leaders. The first trains ran in the evening, escorted by troops. Three bombs were thrown from the crowd in Don Pedro Square. Two persons were injured, one fatally. The cavalry dispersed the mob. Shots were exchanged, and several were wounded. The company is reinstating as many of the strikers as possible.
