A pleasant function took place in the Masterton Drill Hall on Friday evening, when the members of the C. Company of Territorials met to bid farewell .to Lieutenant Haslam, who is severing his connection. with the regiment. Lieutenant Wilson, on behalf of the" Company, spoke of the general regret that was being felt that, such a popular officer was leaving them. He also referred to the splendid work done by Lieut. Haslam during his connection with military circles in Masterton. Colour-Sergeant Miller and Lance-Corporal Cole endorsed the remarks of Lieut., Wilson. Lieut. Wilson -then presented Mr and Mrs Haslam with a beautiful silver fruit service and a handsome oxodised tarais® ink«tand. Lieut. Haslam. in replying, said that what he had done for the company was only the duty of every officer. He-considered the Territorial scheme the best thing that: had been introduced to the country. He thanked the boys on behalf of.Mrs'* Haslam and himself. Mr Haslam's response was greeted w.if;h loud ap- ' District Nurses Jones and Gates wfl>r commence their duties in this district on July Ist. One of the nurses will have headquarters i;i Masterton, and the other will be stationed in Grey town.

A pleasing ceremony took place at the Masterton Railway Station ~on (•Saturday, when Mr and Mrs Ware, who have just relinquished the lease of the railway refreshment rooms, were the recipients of two handsome presents from the members of the railway staff. Mr G. Falla, stationmaster. on behalf of those present, referred in eulogistic terms to the kindness and hospitality of Mr, and Mrs Ware, and they felt that they could not allow them to depart without showing in some degree their high ro gard for them. Mr IMlla, amid cheers, handed to Mr Ware a handsome travelling bag, and to Mrs Ware a travelling rug. The recipients suitably responded. Sir Maurice O'Rorke, M.L.C., will leave Auckland shortly on an extended trip to England.
