There was sunshine when the match between Australia and Surrey was resumed, hut the wicket was soft. Jennings, and Bardsley resumed, Rushby and Smith howling. Tho batsmen were careful, and fifty appeared after sixty-five minutes' play.
Jennings got his leg in front when he had scored 32. He was at the wickets eighty minutes, and gave a stylish display. The rest of the team made a poor stand. Without addition to the scoro, Bardsley, playing forward, was howled by a .breakback. He had scored V* in 45 minutes. 1 Six run;; later Smith caught Mayna off his own bowling. Gregory was run out, by a smart; return by Hobbs at silly point. Matthews, without addition, ras | caught in tho slips, the last four w okets adding 15 runs. The remaining three added twenty-eight. Smith, in making a big drive, .vas caught at long-on. Emery and Hazlitt saw the century hoisted for 130 minute's play. The innings lasted 138 minutes. The bowling was good. ' Surrey opened as usual with Hobb.; and Hayward, Hazlitt and Emery bowling. Webster fielded as substitute For Gregory, who had strained the muscles of his leg. The pitch suited the bowlers at first, the ball turning' quickly. • At lunch the score was 0 for 22. On resuming, Matthews and Kelleway took up the bowling. ■ Minnett acted as subr.i';ute for Gregory. Fifteen runs had bee'- -fided, when a separation was eftV 1, Hayward getting out leg-before )o Matthews. The wicket bad improved, and * Hobbs and Hayes were associated in I a fine stand Runs came freely, and the century was obtained in 80 minutes. Hayes made a mis-'hit, and was caught at mid-off hy Macartney by Hazlitt. The partnership added 82. Ducat and Hobbs made another good stand, adding 42. Hobbs at 76 was taken vat coverpoint.
