Whitty, Webster, McLaren, and Miimett were omitted from the Australian team. The weather was threatening, and the attendance moderate. The wicket was soft. M. C. Bird, the Surrey captain, won the toss, and elected to bat. Hayward and Hobbs opened to Hazlitt and Emery. Bayward had been in fifty-five minutes, when he I was caught at mid-on. Fifty ap- | pan red in 56 minutes. 0- Ten runs later Hobbs, in playing I forward, was smartly stumped by Carkcek. Hayes 'and Ducat'saw the century raised after 11.5 minutes' play. At lunch, the score .stood 2 for 110, Hayes having compiled 34. When 8 he was badly missed by Bardsley at point, off Matthews. Ducat had made 21. He was watchful, and good in off-driving. The bowling was lengthlass. . ' ■ On resuming, the attendance was 3000. Emery and Hazlitt bowled. In the latter's second over a ball took Ducat's middle stump. He had batted 50 minutes. ■ Hayes, in Emery's third over, was out leg-before, and Able, after making a single, had his middle stump knocked down. —5 for 131. The remaining five wickets added • 59 runs. In the latter portion of the innings' wickets fell faster.
