DEPUTATION TO LABOUR DEPARTMENT. A deputation from the Waingawa meat workers, 'consisting of Messrs R. MJaltae, J;. Brewer, and 0. 'R. '•Smith, .waited on< Mr J., Goorgeson, officer in charge of 'the Masterton I Department of Labour, a few days I .'ago, tfor the purpose, of enquiring if ■work could be found for a month or ■two for those who are now rendered idle on account of the reduction in' . hands at the freezing works. Mr (R. vMcßae, as (Spokesman, pointed • out that (between twenty and-thirty men ■lliad been paid off, and these, with their (families,, .represented close on a .(hundred pennons. At present these ■men were out icif employment, with little prospect of getting work until >he imeat works opened aga»:n, as ■at this season of the year work is not •plentiful'. Mr Mdßae also pointed •o\it [that the StronvarJEast ' Coast ,R;>ad had :be«n surveyed a naumiber of years ago, and with the exception, of •a 2ft tracik being made, very little •had! Ibeen done.
