-A London cable, received last night, announced the death of Admiral Sir Hugo L. Pearson, who was Comman-derSn-Chief of the Australian station from 1898 to 1901, at the age of G9 years.

At last night's meeting cf the Masterton Trust Laaids Trust, it wias unanimously decided to place on record an appreciation, of the work done by Mr E. G. Eton- as a .member ana chairman of the Trust.

Mr R. H. Ferguson, school teacher, formerly of Canterbury and late or Hawke's Bay, has been appointed assistant to the Director of Elementary Agricultural Education of Ontario, under whose control there are 5000 schools.

One of the most aristocratic chiefs of the Ngati Pikiao, named H-arpeta Te Pakuru, died at Rotorua on Thurs-? day, aged eighty-nine. Deceased was a great peace advocate in his tribe,, and during the Maori war he was instrumental in avoiding much bloodshed. Pakuru was widely known in the Waikato and Bay of Plenty.

Mr D. M. Melntosh, of the Masterton Post Office staff, who recently receivcel notice of his transfer to Hastings, has been advised from the Head Office that the transfer has been cancelled. He will, therefore, remain in Masterton.

A Press Association .cable message received records the death of Mr Rankin, police magistrate at Brisoano, who about.three years ago visited New Zealand for the purpose of reporting to the Queensland Government on the effects of prohibition in the Dominion.

Mi' J. H. Pauling was taken suddenly ill at the meeting of the Masterton Trust LaixK Trust last evening. Ho was removed to his home at Kuripuni, but his ■erudition became so serious that Dr. Cook wa<s summoned. At an early hour this morning the doctor reported that Mr Pauling was somewhat easier. He is suffering from an internal complaint. The friends of Mr T. B. Fox, traveller for Messrs Abbot. Oram and Co., will regret to hear of the death of his wife, which occurred at his residence •in Powmll Street, Mastentcn, on Thursday evening, after a protracted illness. The deceased lady, who was of a quiet, unassuming manner, had made-numerous friends* in the district. Her remains will, be interred in the Master'toii' cemetery this afternoon. Mr Fox will have the sympathy of a large circle of acquaintances hi bis sad bereavement.
