CONVINCING PROOFS.

The Right Bon. H. H. Asquith, 'Speaking e.t xhe Guildhall gathering of the Empire's commercial representatives, said that one of the most convincing proofs and surest (safeguards c:f our Imperial loyalty, unity and strength, ■Was tui-at for several years a quarter of iho Motherland's imports came from the Overseas Dominions, and over a third of her exports went there. The aggregate trade amounted to £400,000,000. Lord Deshorough said that it was becoming daily more apparent that if the Empire was to live it must consol icsat& in commerce as well as in defeniae. Britain a generation ago was supreme in commerce, and feared in arms, hut the progress o'f lather countries more than threatened her supre'nvvcy in commerce. They must see to it that the Empire maintained the position! Which Britain once held alone. Referring to Imperial defence, Lord -Desborough said that they appreciated the spirit demonstrated oy the Dominions.
