It was pointed oust Iby the deputation, which was introduced by Mr G. R. Sykes, MVP., that" there was no community of inteircsts between Wnih'olri VaJley and Poaigaroa district. If |the settlors in the Valley were allowed to amalgamate with tli2 Masiterton County Council they would consent to be included in a rating area for itho jpua'peso of raising a loan, sufficiently large to allow the compkMm of mdta-Iling from Tiraumea to the 'boundaries of tho Akitio and 'Masterton counties, ,a distance of about five miles. Thjo A'kitio County Council, having already arranged for the metalling of t!he6r portion of the road from Pongaroa to Rakaunui, the main arterial road from Eketahuna or Mfltstertora to Pongaroa would then be pub in good order and would allow 'the Isettlers of the Akitio dn'sirict i ready access to of the abovenamed towns. It would also be the means of expediting the delivery of imails to Pongaroa arid vice versa, and •of relieving the congebfcSbn of heavy traffic, which now obtains on the Pah-iatua-Pongaroa road, and wondd be a distinct benefit to all concerned'.
The Akitio Council decided, after •due deliberation, that they could ■lSoi under present conditions accede to ithie request of the deputation. It was 'pointed out that heavy subsidies had already 'been levied on tho Council by the adjoining Council® on account of the traffic ifroni the Akiitio County passing through these 'Counties in order to reach the various townships. If the traffic, the metalling of the Alfredton-Weber Road, nvas diverted to the Masterton and •Eketahuna roads, there was a dangeitbat those Counties would make a further demand on liflie Akitio County Council.' If the Mafetert'on and (Eketahuna County Councils were to (agree for a term of years to undertake to make no sudh levy, tho Akitio County Council .would be prepared to further fonsider' the matter.
