LOCAL BODIES' LOANS.
The 1 Government has decided to limit the loans- to local bodies to £SOOO. This will he .a serious obstacle to prlogness in. .many of the newjly-fielbtled dfetric.ts cif the North Island. A way out otf the difficulty- has been suggested, and that is tha't the Government eihou'.d guainantee Joans far larger slums which may he desired by local bodids. 3(f this were done, it might be .pose'cMe' to .ilakie the money priviately. The .question arises, however, if the Government can pledge the securities of the State for private advances, why'should it mot borrow the money, as in the past, and intake the .advances itself ?
