PROPOSED "ROYAL" SOCIETY

THE POSITION MISUNDERSTOOD.

Some months ago the Masterton A. and r. Association sent a remit to the A. and P. Conference, suggesting the formation! of a "Royal" Society in New Zealand, to act as a controlling body. Tiiis remit was unanimously adopted' by the Conference, and was then sent to the individual Associations for their endorsement, or otherwise.

At Saturday's meeting of the Masterton A. and P. Association, Mr W. Perry, who is one of the Executive of the Conference, stated that, he had received from the Secretary the replies of the various Associations'to the circular sent out.' Several of the ledditig bodies in New Zealand had expressed themselves arerse to the fonnaticu of a "Royal" Society, thinking that it would mean the holding of a Rov;;I show in one or other centre. .Mr Perry stated that it had never jeen suggested holding a Royal show. All that was proposed was to institute <a controlling body to which individual Associations could appeal. The Secretary had suggested that another circakr be sent out, explaining the portion, arid he (Mr Percy) moved that the suggestion be approved by the Association.

Mr D. McGregor seconded the resolution. He thought some of the Associations had been af raid-that the Royal Society would mean the holding of a Royal show in, a given centre. The intention Was merely to have «, body to carry out the wishes of the ; Conference. The remit had been unanimously agreed io by the Conference. '' '

Mr W. J. We'icn tnought the matter one for consideration by the Conference.

Mr Perry said the proposal was to carry the matter out more «n the lines of the Farmers' Union, Avhich had a Dominion Executive. At present there was .no body to which Associations could make representations. There was no means of putting into effect-the wishes of the Conference. What was wanted was an Executive of the whole of the Associations. . Mr Welch asked if the Conference had not already an executive. Mr Perry.replied that it had,- but it wanted "something stronger.

Mr Welch, said this looked like setting,up „a dual body. . . ; , Mr Q. Donald understood that it was pmposed to form an institution advise the Department ;m referen'ce.to experiments, etc. ~ "After further discussion, the resolution of Mr Perry, that the Secretary of the Conference be asked to send out a second circular, was carried on the voices. >
