The Department was making the erection of these wireless stations a matter of urgency, recognisiing tlheir value to people travelling by sea. The New Zealand coast-line was a dangeirbus'one, and the Departonen't recognised its obligations for every expeditidn to be nxsed in-the establishment of stations/ The existing .station 4 in tine tower .'of •the Wellington Post Office had proved of very great convenience to shipping, even though it. jwias not in a suite able position, to establish communication, over a wide range. Nothing was being done- in* regard to the New ■Dlrighton station at present. The *Postm«ster-<Gieneral indicated plainly that tihe Department had no -ii.'.tention of licensing private experimental ■wireless stations in New Zealand. He pointed out that as messages had,.to b.e pioked avp, it was absolutely essential that .there should .be only one controlling laaithoriity. Australia had put its loot down an private stations, and Amerioa had recently furnished an instan •• of the confusion w'hioh these private stlaticns caused. The Department, in' tine public interest, could not give concessions to private stations. , ni , ■,
