THE ENGLISH ENIUi.RY. FURTHER EVIDENCE. (Received Juno 6, <).o() a.m.) LONDON, June 5. At the inquiry held in connection with tho wreck of I'iio Titanic, Crawford, a steward in charge of a boat testified that the captain told him to row towards a vessel whoso lights wore visible and place the passengers aboard, and .return to the Titanic. Mr Ismay contended that it" was quite outside of his province to suggest what precautions the captain should take in the presence of ice. Mr Sanderson, manager of tin White Star Company, testified that it was in either wiso nor necessary toprovide boats for all, owing to the impossibility of filling and launching all of them properly. H was bettor to build a- ship so safe as to render it unnecessary to consider the possibility of boating everybody.. Mr ismay, m the coxirse of his evidence, stated that his boat pulled towards a ship .a .long n.ay off. He thought it was a sailing ship. He was sure it-was not the steamer CaLifornian, which would be on the Titaiiiie*s port side. The' : vjessol he saw* was on the starboard side, '■' Mr Ismay hesitated when Sir Rufus Tsaiicts, K.C;. asked him /whether it would have. been, desirable to slow ''down' on approaching the ice. Lord _Mersey, president of the enquiry, said : "Answer the question." Mr Ismay then replied.: "No, if you can see far enough to clear the ice." Sir Rufus Isaac asked Mr Ismay to be frank. What was the object in going at full speed ? Mr Ismay, under pressure, replied that the captain was. anxious to get ■through the ice quicker. He denied ■talling Mrs Ryerson and another lady on the Titanic that they had started more boilers to get out of the ice. He stated that he had arranged with the chief engincca" before he commenced the voyage to,run the Titanic at full speed for a few hours on Monday if the \veather was favourable.
