The State Labour Congress h< opened. Mr D. Watson, in his Presidential address, said that all Unionists were aspiring to one. grand purpose—tin right of the worker to enjoy the fruits of his labour. In .advocating the Federation of Labour, Mr Watson declared that the need to-day was to make a strike absolutely unnecessary. He trusted that they would cherish the idea that strikes were obsolete weapons. The experiences of the LitJigow strike should make them shudder at the thought of .what a, general strike would mean. He concluded by saying: "If our country is in the hands of the capitalists it will be our duty to free it and possess it as cur own."
