DAMAGE BY QUAIL.
The d-.Nnage dono by quail in certain districts was brought up at the FarmMrs' Union conference at Auckland. ■One delegate stated that the birds 'consumed -a 'big /proportion of the 'smaller seeds which the farmer was 'compelled to sow, 'as wdH as clover leaves in large quantities. They were •very fond of (blackberries, and helped 'to spread the weeds. The only argutanenfc in their 'favour was that of kport, but there was no sport to be got out of 'them, except on . atubble lands. He had ■.brought down seven with one .shot. Another delegate stated that he 'had .taken a whole handful of clover seeds from one bird's crop, "and on one drive 'lie .had counted 40 quail along the road, 'besides young ones. It wa/s resolved: :"That owing to the loss occasioned by quail, ■more especially to 'bush .settlers, hy de'struotion of seed and the spreading of 'noxious weed seeds ,the Minister of .'lnternal Affairs be approached by the executive with a view to quail being excluded from ithe iG'ame Preservation ■Act, in districts where a majority of •the settlers express sui.3l a desire through their 'local (bodies."
