YESTERDAY'S MATCHES. NOTES ON THE PLAY. (By "Goal-post.") The fixtures of the Wairarapa Hockey Association were advanced another stage yesterday. Practically the whole of the championship matches were plfayed at Lansdowne, there being a good attendance of the public. Th'O grounds were very {.oft, Biib.se. quent to tho previous rain, but nevertheless some ,good hockey was witnessed. The various teams which took part in yesterday's matches were perceptibly weakened by several of their players being absent at the Territorial camp, and Carterton seniors were forced to take the field with eight men. The day's matches resulted as follows :—■ ' SENIOR. I ST. MATTHEW'S (3) v. FEATHERSTON 1. i This match took place on tho Lans- ' downe No. 2 ground, and was very evenly contested. The Feathcrston eleven were not at their full strength, ibut put up .a very creditable fight against their more .experienced opponents. Tho game was characteristic of good forward play throughout, and I tho Featherston rearguard played a ■fine defensive game. E. Douglas, in i the St. Matthew's forwards, , was a j j tower of strength, and shot the throe [ goals for the winners. He was ably, j assisted by the backs, of which N. Boyd and P. Fraser were the most, ' brilliant. The remainder were all fair-, ly safe. T. Miller wias the most pro- J mirient of the opposition, who with x\l little consistent practice.should more' than hold their own in the future. ■, J Aitcbison scored the only goal for Featherston.
P. AND T. (o) v. CARTERTON (1). Tliis match created .a deal of interest, bub the fact .that Carterton had not their full complement detracted a pood deal from the contest. In the first spell the game was evenly contested, and resulted in each side- scoring a goal. In the second half, P. and T. exerted .themselves,, and played in d.osJiins style, and soon had their opponets a,t their mercy, and four goals were quickly netted, Carterton put up a. good fight, but with the shortage in the team were no match'.for the P. and T. For the winners, Eddy was the most prominent back, while in the forwards It. Williams was .in his best form and scored two clever goals. Richards, Devonport, -and Loader were also in good form, and scored one goal each. For tke losers, Tunnicliffe played a great game, and Carterton s duly goal was scored by ;him. JUNIOR. ! EXCELSIOR (6) v. ST. MATTHEW'S (0). As the scores indicate, Excelsior were the letter team throughout..andwere never seriously troubled. The pick.of ■the winners were Tooby and Bemlo, in the forwards, and Lawrence ami Tait in the Ibacks. Of -the losess, Dean, Falk, Wimsett and.Peters played most consistently.
