OBITUARY

MB SEPTIMUS BACON. ... The death occurred at Whangarei last week of' Mr Septimus Bacon, a gentleman who was a prominent figure in Master/con in the seventies and eighties, and .subsequently.- ii* the Forty Mile Bush. The late Mr Bacon,, who was about seventy years of age, sticeumtbed to the dreaded cancer, from which he bad ha. a -sufferer > foe many years. When in Masterton hs was engaged in the flour-milling business with Mr T. Wirigley on a site between the two Waipoua bridges. . Tho building was destroyed by. fire, and the firm were heavy losers. Mr Bacon. afterwards went to Eketa'huna, where he was engaged for a considert-JnV 'time in the sawmilling business; with Mr Fred Bright, now of Masterton. He subsequently left for the Kcrmade-s Islands with Ma- R. W. I. Carver and others, but the venture did noL. 'prove remunerative, and the party returned to the main-land. When in Masterton, the late Mr Bacon took an active part in-facial politics. Foe a time he was a memiber of the Borough Council, and;it avos largely through his instrumentality .that the municipal gasworks loan was carried. For some yeans he had resided in the north. He leaves a widow and ore son (Mr Edward Bacon, of Napier). Mr S. llußse.ll, of Masterton, is a- . ■brotflier-in-iaw of the deceased. ,<'■■
