FOOTBALL NOTES
I (By All Black.) The Rugby season was further I postponed on Saturday last, in'respect | to ,the memory of Air A'. (). Cadwalilader, whose funeral took place on ■Saturday afternoon, and was ono of the largest seen in the district. The deceased was one of the finest footballers Wairarapa lias produced, and having always taken an active interest in the game, at was not to be expected that a great number of players would 'be present at ithe funeral. The first matches of the season will now take place on Saturday next, all drawings to remain unaltered. T3ie postponement of the games for another iwee kwiJl afford the competing teams an lopportunity of getting into form.
The Wairarapa -Rugby Union is losing .two of its most energetic (members .in M.r A. B. Charters- and Air J. M. Niioliolls. Tiii? fformer was one of the best supporters? of Rugby in the Wairarapa, and apart .from being in the- ifiii'wt flight as a .referee, did much : to foster the game -in every way. His services will ibe much missed, and his place hard to .fill. Mr J. M. Nlicholls, for a number of years secretary of the Wairarapa Rugby Union, has also tendered his. resignation, he having -been transferred to Nelson. .Mr Nicholb did good and useful work during his (term as secretary, and always lias been a keen enthusiast, doing his work for the good ot the game. The appointment of Mt E. McKenzie to the vacant secretaryship will Ibe a popular one with all parties, as Will-also Ibe the-appointment,of Mir A. Booth to the vacant position on the .senior selection--.committee.
The referees who. 'have charge of the sieniior matches next Saturday are new to Wairarapa football, (but are reputed to be exper.te af the refereeing ibusiuess. Their task Will not be an easy one, as following in the wake of such referees as Messrs Charters and Mc-K-enzie, a rater high ■ standard has ibeen. set. It is- possible that the latter, however,- will take dharge of the Avhistle thiis season, when it is convenient.
Greytowit are reported to be a strong team this .season, and have secured mien from a if airly wide district. What is more ■important, however, is the fact 'that they ai j enthusiastic, and are out to win . Jim Hanley, who played m Auckland last season, is this .season throwing in his- lot 'W.i'bli the Masterton Club. Football im Wellington this season k full of interest, and .some great battles aro due before the championship lis decided. At present Oriental are in the lead, 'while Athletic, Petone and Melrose are all well up. The tatter team played -their best game to date on Saturday, when they lest to Oriental. Hough play seems to he a good deal in vogue this season, the latest reports coming from Auckland, where two ex-Wellington forwards were ordered off for .rougfhmg it.
