TURKS SURPRISED
AN ISLAND CAPTURED.

ROME, May 18
Prior to the surrender of Rhodes Island, a garrison numbering 1800 Italians was landed in two columns in the •night time, 'a,nd co-operated with the third, surprising and driving the Turks, after a sharp fight, into* ravines, the only retreat from which was commanded by guns from a warship. Eighty-three Turks were billed and twenty-six wounded. Four Italians were killed, and 20 wounded.
Admiral Amaglio telegraphs that all the Turkish troops on- the island are prisoners.. Ho adds that the officers were allowed to retain their swords in recognition of their gallant conduct. The despatches evoked unbounded enthusiasm in both Chambers.
